October 16 was Dictionary Day and commemorates the birthday of Noah Webster. But who was Noah Webster?
In 1806, American Noah Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. In 1807, Webster began compiling an expanded and fully comprehensive dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language; it took twenty-seven years to complete it.
The Webster dictionary is one of the most commonly used dictionaries in the world. To celebrate the day, what better way than to learn a few new ones and their meanings.
