Volcanoes are openings in the Earth’s crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from below the surface of the earth. They have existed right from the time our planet was formed, helping create more than 80% of our planet’s surface.

There are volcanoes on every continent, among which around 1,500 are considered potentially active.

Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that the biggest known volcano is not on Earth? It’s located on our galactic neighbour, Mars!
