August 22 is celebrated as Madras Day in commemoration of the official founding of the city. Among the many landmarks the city boasts of, Vallur Kottam stands out because of its architecture. Designed like a chariot, it was built as a tribute to the Tamil philosopher and poet Valluvar, known for his collection of couplets collectively titled Tirukkural.
