John Ronald Reuel Tolkien or J. R. R. Tolkien as is he was known was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He died on September 2, 1973, in Bournemouth, Hampshire, England.
Tolkien was an English writer and scholar who achieved fame with his children’s book The Hobbit (1937) and his richly inventive epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings (1954–55). His father, a bank manager, died in South Africa and JRR, his brother and his mother moved to England. He was four years old at that time.
