On August 8, 1942, Mahatma Gandhi delivered a historic address at the All-India Congress Committee session in Bombay. He demanded an end to British rule in India. What followed was a mass civil disobedience movement known as the Quit India Movement or the August Movement.

Although it was eventually subdued, the fiery movement united Indians against the British and gave momentum to the freedom struggle and led to independence three years later.
