Deepavali celebrations are a sight to behold. Not just for the fireworks and people’s colourful costumes, but also for the art on display in every household. Rangoli is a quintessential part of the festivities. Be it the intricate, monochromatic dots and curves popular in Southern India or the colour-filled stencils in a variety of designs, every house welcomes its guest with this sight at the threshold.

Rangoli or kolam is an age-old art that requires practice, creativity and an eye for design and colour. It is traditionally created with ground rice powder, mixed with natural colours. There are versions that use flowers and rock salt too.

Are you new to this art? Stress not. We’ve got you covered. Create your own stencils with these simple steps, and you are on your way to creating colourful rangolis in time for the festivities.

(Once you have mastered the basic steps, you can try your hand at more designs. Get creative!)
