The Solar System has eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The planets closest to the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are also known as terrestrial planets because they have solid surfaces. Venus is the Earth’s closest planetary neighbour. Earth is the fifth largest planet. Mars is a dusty, cold, desert world with a very thin atmosphere.

The giant planets – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune – do not have hard surfaces, but swirling gases above a core. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants. Uranus and Neptune are ice giants. Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System. If you imagine it to be a hollow shell, then around 1,000 Earths would fit inside. Saturn is the second-largest planet in our solar system. The seventh planet from the Sun, Uranus has the third largest diameter of planets in our solar system.

Beyond Neptune, there is a newer class of smaller worlds called dwarf planets. These include Pluto, Ceres, Makemake, Haumea, and Eris.

Take this for-fun-only quiz and find out which planet you can identify with.
