World Rivers Day, celebrated on September 24, is meant to be a celebration of the world’s waterways. It is an occasion to highlight the value of rivers, and increase public awareness.

First and foremost, it’s important to know the key rivers of the world and around you. Here’s a graphic showing the amount of freshwater available along with a map of some of the larger rivers of the world. It’s quite informative!

You can download the map and mark other important rivers in your country. Definitely a few in India and maybe Australia..

In India, there are both perennial and seasonal rivers. More importantly, there are some zones which are identified as sensitive during monsoons and prone to floods. Due to climate change and man-made factors (encroachment, construction, deforestation etc.), regions have become highly sensitive. Even cities like Mumbai and Chennai have seen recent flooding because the marshlands and canals have been built upon or blocked. Move the slider to know the rivers and the flood zones in the country.
