Happy World Emoji Day! Yes, that’s right. There is such a day. This whimsical day falls on July 17 and celebrates the cute little images that are often used in text messaging and on the Internet. Whether happy, sad or angry, a lot can be said with these images. What started out as just facial expressions has now turned into much more with pictures of common objects, places, weather, animals, and more. Emojis are so popular that there are now so many products that use them, including phone covers, t-shirts, pillows, and more.

A movie
Emojis have become so popular over the years that, in 2017, an animated film “The Emoji Movie” was released by Sony Pictures Animation. It starred the voices of T.J. MIller, James Corden, Anna Faris and others. The film centres around Gene, a multi-expressional emoji who lives in a teenager’s phone, and sets out on a journey to become a normal ‘meh’ emoji, like his parents

Here are some fun-sized bits of information about emojis:
– They originated in Japanese mobile phones in 1999. The word comes from the Japanese words “e” (which means picture) and “moji” (which means character).
– The emoji craze had caught on from 2012 and 2013, and it was added as a real word by the Oxford Dictionaries in 2013.
– The most popular emoji used is the “face with tears of joy”. So, in 2015, Oxford Dictionaries named this emoji as the Word of the Year because it was the most used that year.
– The first World Emoji Day was celebrated in 2014.
– As of July 2017, there are 2,666 emojis in the Unicode Standard list.
