Begin in your backyard

When I interact with students during outreach programmes, they generally ask me two questions – where do we begin to observe nature? How do we get our parents to take us to wildlife reserves for observing nature?
It is true that charismatic animals like wild tigers and elephants can be seen mostly in wildlife reserves. But, to observe nature, you need not begin by going to the forest. Observing nature can start right in your backyard. ‘Backyard wildlife’ is all about watching animals in our homes and neighbourhood. The creatures that we discover here are the ones we often ignore. When we pay attention to our backyard, we get to explore a whole new world – birds, lizards, house spiders, squirrels and what not!
‘Backyard wildlife watching’ does not require a huge investment. All you need are a pair of observant eyes and the ability to play host to these amazing creatures. And you are ready to begin!
