Aestivation is a state of inactivity occurring in some animals during prolonged periods of drought or heat. Feeding, respiration, movement, and other bodily activities are considerably slowed down. Invertebrate and vertebrate animals are known to enter this state to avoid damage from high temperatures and the risk of drying out. Animals that live on land and water can undergo aestivation.
