It is a folk art popular in the Mithila region of Bihar, specifically originating from a district named Madhubani that means ‘forest of honey.’ Here, and in adjoining areas, women have been painting on walls and floors on ceremonial occasions to invoke blessings and an auspicious aura in their homes.
