Sign language is a form of communication primarily used as a means of communication for and with people who are hearing or speech impaired. It helps in speech development, social interaction and also in being able to learn new words. Many signs are visually associated to the object being referred to. Shall we learn the basics of sign language?

These GIFs can teach you the basic signs. It can be used to express your feelings, ideas or attitudes.

Thank you

To say ‘Thank you’ to someone, place the tip of your first three fingers on your chin and then move it towards the person. Remember a smile is always a huge help. This can also be done with one hand.

Yes

When you agree with someone or have to say ‘yes’, make a fist and move it front and back, just like you nod your head.

No

In order to say ‘no’, bring your index and middle fingers together and touch their tip with the tip of your thumb. To say ‘no, thank you’, you can combine the signs of ‘no’ and ‘thank you’.

Sorry

To apologise, touch your knuckles to your chest and make a circle, or move the hand up and down.

See you later

Time to say goodbye, until next time? Make a ‘V’ or a peace sign with your index and middle fingers, and then touch it to your cheek and then move in the opposite direction. This means ‘see you’. Then make an ‘L’ with your index finger and thumb, and move it downward to say ‘later’. Combine these two to say ‘see you later’.
