When you dig the earth, if you’re lucky, you’ll find more than just rocks and pebbles. You may perhaps chance upon one of the 4,000 minerals – inorganic solids that form naturally into crystals. These minerals are formed when when molten rock (or magma) cools or when it separates from mineral-rich water.
Some of these crystals are the prized gemstones that look like ordinary rocks. But once cut and polished, they dazzle and shine, making up our precious or semiprecious stones.
Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds qualify as precious stones, while every other gemstone is considered to be semiprecious. This categorisation is mainly due to the rarity of the stone and its perceived value.
