Did you know that the world is divided into different time zones, with the east being ahead of the west? When you are waking up and getting ready for school, children in another part of the world are just going to bed!
Here are some examples of contrasting time zones around the world! Move the slider between these images to see the differences.
1. It’s 9.00 am in New York City, and people are getting ready to head to schools and offices. At the same time, it’s 10.00 pm in Tokyo and the day is drawing to a close. Japan is 13 hours ahead of the U.S.
2. Russia is the largest country in the world. No wonder then that there are 11 time zones within the country itself! When Moscow (which is in Western Russia) is engulfed in darkness as it is the middle of the night there, it is morning in Vladivostok (a city in Eastern Russia)! The time difference between the two cities is seven hours.
3. In December, Brazil (which is situated in the Southern Hemisphere) experiences spring, and temperatures are fairly warm. At the same time, Belgium (which is situated in the Northern Hemisphere) enjoys winter, and is enveloped in a blanket of snow.
4. During the months of September, October, and November, people in Southern India enjoy the monsoon season. At the same time, the leaves turn orange in the U.S., signalling the season of autumn.
5. India is truly a country of diversity. From December to February, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh witnesses temperatures as low as -2 degrees Celsius, while Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu basks in moderate temperatures.
