The question of how many joints there are in a human body is difficult to answer. It depends on a number of variables–the definition of joints, the inclusion of sesamoids and the age of the person.

As far as definition is concerned, it can be said that a joint is a point where two bones connect. Sesamoids are bones embedded in tendons, but not connected to the bones. For example, the patella or the kneecap. These bones vary from person to person. The age of the person is also a determining factor. Babies have about 270 bones while adults have 206, with 80 in the axial skeleton and 126 in the appendicular skeleton.

Try your hand at these true and false statements to see how familiar you are with the joints in your body.
