Have you seen a postage stamp? Technically speaking, it is like a receipt – used to indicate prepayment of fees for the posting of mail. It is affixed to an envelope/ letter. These stamps carry different types of images – of famous people, places, events, animals and more.

Sometimes, a commemorative postage stamp is issued. It is issued on an important date marking an anniversary, to honour or commemorate a place, event, person or even an object.

What about when there is a significant event but one that may not be observed nationally? For example, Young World’s 20th anniversary in the year 2010. It was a milestone event for its readers young and old. For such events, the postal department issues something called a Special Cover. It is a postal cover with an image and text recognising the special event or person.
