While we celebrate our independence, let’s take a look at some buildings and memorials that have been pivotal in the process.

The Agra Fort, for instance, is where most of the Mughal emperors lived. It was traditionally known as Badalgarh. When Sikandar Lodi shifted his capital from Delhi, he constructed a few buildings in the pre-existing Fort in Agra and made it his capital. It was the site of a battle of the First War of Independence, 1857.

Freedom fighters and political prisoners were exiled to the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, which, after 1857, was established as a prison island. The jail was perhaps the most infamous prison of the British Raj. Today, the jail complex is a national memorial monument.
