Music with the wind
A wind instrument uses air as the primary vibrating medium to produce a sound. A column of air is set into vibration by the player blowing into a mouthpiece set at or near the end of the resonator.
These instruments are diverse and have been used to make music since prehistoric times. There are two types of wind instruments – woodwind and brass. Woodwind instruments are recorders, flutes, oboes, clarinets saxophones and bassoons, whereas brass instruments are horns, trumpets, trombones, tubas and euphoniums.
In India, the most popular wood instruments are the shehnai and bansuri. Koreans use a reed instrument made of bamboo. It is called piri and emits a sound that is mellower than that of the oboe. On the other hand, Armenians play the duduk, an ancient double reed woodwind flute made of apricot wood.
