The 2020 Summer Olympics will take place in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24 to August 09, 2020. The sporting extravaganza will witness over 11,000 athletes from about 200 countries competing in 339 events in 33 different sports.
Interestingly, every edition of the Olympic Games sees some sports removed, making way for newer ones. Five new sports have been included in the upcoming edition: baseball/softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding.
This decision was taken by the 129th IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro. The International Olympic Committee has called this step “the most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic programme in modern history”. This is mainly because skateboarding and sport climbing events will be staged in temporary venues installed in urban settings, “marking a historic step in bringing the Games to young people and reflecting the trend of urbanisation of sport.”
Here is a collage representing all the five new additions to the Olympic Games.
