Filtering is fun

Your kidneys are hard workers. They function round the clock to filter your blood and rid your body of waste. Do you know the parts of the kidney?

Your kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped shaped organs that are a part of your urinary system. They filter your blood. This means that they take out extra water and waste from your blood, which leaves your body in the form of urine. Your kidneys work round the clock. Every minute, approximately half a cup of blood passes through them.

Blood enters the kidney through the renal arteries. Each kidney consists of an outer renal cortex (where blood is filtered), an inner renal medulla (which contains the renal pyramids where urine is formed), and a renal pelvis (where urine is collected). Urine drains from the renal pelvis into the ureter. Filtered blood leaves through the renal veins.

Based on what you have just read, can you try and label the parts of the kidney?
