LeBron’s latest record

LeBron James recently became only the ninth player ever to have 9,000 or more regular-season assists in NBA history. With only one active player having more assists than him, James could well finish his career high up on the list.

WHAT IS AN ASSIST?
In basketball, an assist corresponds to the last pass that directly leads to a score by a field goal. The assist is
generally attributed to the person who makes the pass to a team-mate who then scores. The judgement, however,
might be subjective within the confines of the definition.

Here is the list of NBA players with 9,000 or more assists:
1 John Stockton ~ 15,806 assists
2 Jason Kidd ~ 12,091 assists
3 Steve Nash ~ 10,335 assists
4 Mark Jackson ~ 10,334 assists
5 Magic Johnson ~ 10,141 assists
6 Oscar Robertson ~ 9,887 assists
7 Chris Paul ~ 9,401 assists
8 Isiah Thomas ~ 9,061 assists
9 LeBron James ~ 9,036 assists

Late in December 2019, in Los Angeles Lakers’ game against Dallas Mavericks, LeBron James made an outlet pass to Anthony Davis three-quarters of the way down the court for a dunk. That was his 9,000th assist in NBA, making him the only player with over 30,000 points, 9,000 rebounds and 9,000 assists – testament to his allround playing ability.

James has 9,036 assists in his regular season career. He also leads this season’s assists charts with 374 assists in 34 games played – an average of 11 assists per game.

LeBron James and Chris Paul are the only active players among the top nine in the list of assists providers.

Olympic debuts

Do you know what sports will make their debut at the world’s biggest sporting event set to take place this year? Click here to find out.

The 2020 Summer Olympics will take place in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24 to August 09, 2020. The sporting extravaganza will witness over 11,000 athletes from about 200 countries competing in 339 events in 33 different sports.

Interestingly, every edition of the Olympic Games sees some sports removed, making way for newer ones. Five new sports have been included in the upcoming edition: baseball/softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding.

This decision was taken by the 129th IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro. The International Olympic Committee has called this step “the most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic programme in modern history”. This is mainly because skateboarding and sport climbing events will be staged in temporary venues installed in urban settings, “marking a historic step in bringing the Games to young people and reflecting the trend of urbanisation of sport.”

Here is a collage representing all the five new additions to the Olympic Games.
