Deepavali, the festival of lights, begins on the darkest night (first night of the new moon) in the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar and goes on for four days. The first day is Dhanteras. Houses are cleaned preparing for the visit of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Narkachaturdashi or Choti Deepavali is the second day. In parts of south India, it is the main day of the festival. The moonless night is lit up with diyas.
On the evening of the third day (Badi Deepavali) there are firecrackers and people visit each other. Everyone wears new clothes and distributes sweets. Balipadyami is the fourth day and the first day of the new year in the Hindu calendar. A day of feasting with special dishes, more sweets and snacks and every conceivable treat. Bhai Bij is the last day and it celebrates sibling love.

Two astronauts — Christina Koch and Jessica Meir — made history on October 18, by embarking on NASA’s first all-woman spacewalk. During the spacewalk, the two astronauts received a call from the White House. While speaking to President Donald Trump, Meir said, “We hope that we can provide an inspiration to everybody, not only women, but to everybody that has a dream, that has a big dream, and who is willing to work hard … this is my first flight and my very first spacewalk, so it is a pretty incredible feeling I’m sure you can all imagine, and it’s one I will never forget.”
