Monumental memories

Here are a few buildings that have been mute spectators to the events that unfolded before them. Let’s learn more about them with this quiz…

While we celebrate our independence, let’s take a look at some buildings and memorials that have been pivotal in the process.

The Agra Fort, for instance, is where most of the Mughal emperors lived. It was traditionally known as Badalgarh. When Sikandar Lodi shifted his capital from Delhi, he constructed a few buildings in the pre-existing Fort in Agra and made it his capital. It was the site of a battle of the First War of Independence, 1857.

Freedom fighters and political prisoners were exiled to the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, which, after 1857, was established as a prison island. The jail was perhaps the most infamous prison of the British Raj. Today, the jail complex is a national memorial monument.

On Sunday, July 21, 2019, Adam Peaty posted a world-record in the semi-finals of the 100 metre breaststroke event, becoming the first swimmer to go under the magic mark of 57 seconds in the event. It was something that he had been working towards ever since winning gold in the event at the 2016 Olympics at Rio, and even though he called it an “incredible” feat, his celebrations wasn’t overboard.

For he had to turn up for the final the next day. Though he was on course to break his world record again at the halfway point of the final, he had to be content with gold as he won the race in a time of 57.14 seconds, ahead of his compatriot, who won silver, and a Chinese swimmer, who claimed bronze.

As the only man to have gone below 58 seconds in the event, more than 10 of the best times ever recorded in the 100m breaststroke event now belong to Peaty.

Apart from becoming the first man to swim the event in under 57 seconds, he also became the first man to capture three 100 metres backstroke world titles, having won in 2015 and 2017 as well.
