In parts

Try out this memory game to see how well you can convert fractions to percentages, it’s not as hard as you think it might be.

A fraction represents part of a whole. So, when something is broken up into a number of parts, the fraction shows how many of those parts you have. For example, if there is a basket full of apples and you take five of the apples, then you have 5 out of 10 apples (shown as 5/10), which means you have half of them. The number on the top is the the numerator while the other is the denominator.

Sometimes fractions may have different numbers, but their value remains the same. These are equivalent fractions and one example of this is the number 1. If the numerator and the denominator are the same, then the fraction has the same equivalent value as 1.

So in the above example of the apples – 5/10 is the same as 1/2, just as 50/100 and 20/40 are also the same as 1/2.

Another type of fraction is the percent. The “percent” is a fraction with a denominator of 100. When you say 50% it is the same as saying 50/100. How do you convert a fraction to a percentage? It’s simple, just multiply the numerator with 100 and divide that number with the denominator.

What would 8/20 be as a percentage? First multiply 8 by 100, which gives us 800. Then, divide 800 by 20, which is 40. Therefore, it would be 40%. A quicker way is, 8/20 can be simplified to 4/10. So 4*100=400 and 400÷10=40%, You will get the same answer.

Here’s a memory game for you. Can you find out the percentages? Try it out now.

Marta’s might

Read about Marta, a Brazilian footballer, and how she has achieved a goal scoring record in football World Cup history during the Women’s World Cup 2019.

When Marta converted a penalty in Brazil’s group game against Italy in the women’s World Cup on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, she not only gave them a 1-0 win that put them through to the knock-out stages of the tournament, but also gave herself a goal-scoring record.

For with that goal, she became the outright all-time leading scorer at men’s or women’s senior FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Brazil might have been knocked out of the tournament when they lost the Round of 16 clash to hosts France 2-1, but it is going to take a lot more to knock Marta off her perch.

Here’s how it happened…

Playing at Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes, France, Brazil needed a positive result to progress to the Round of 16 from the group stages. With a little over 15 minutes left, the score still read nil-nil when Brazilian Debinha was adjudged to have been fouled by Elena Linari inside the penalty area. Marta made no mistake from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to claim her record goal and then celebrated it by kissing her boot.

That goal put her right on top of the list, above Ronaldo and Miroslav Klose. This is how the top three stack up:

1) Brazil’s Marta
World Cups played: 5 (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019)
World Cup matches played: 20
World Cup goals scored: 17

2) Germany’s Miroslav Klose
World Cups played: 4 (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014)
World Cup matches played: 24
World Cup goals scored: 16

3) Brazil’s Ronaldo
World Cups played: 3 (1998, 2002, 2006)
World Cup matches played: 19
World Cup goals scored: 15
