Poll Fray: Just click and learn

Of course you are aware of the national players. But how good is your knowledge of regional parties? In the backdrop of General Elections 2019, this map-based primer will help you find out.

With 90 crore eligible voters across the country, India’s Lok Sabha election is the largest in the world. The election is being held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, 2019. The results of the polls will be announced on May 23.

We know that the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is battling the main opposition Indian National Congress (INC) and a host of regional parties. A large number of these State parties form alliances with the major national parties (namely BJP, INC, NCP, CPI, CPI(M), BSP and TMC) or sometimes even contest independently. Apart from the national and State parties, there are registered but unrecognised political parties, which can choose from a list of ‘free symbols’ issued by the poll panel to contest the elections.

How well do you know these regional players?

Hop on! Join us as we travel across each state to get a glimpse of some of the nation’s major State parties.

(In the States with no entries the national parties are the main players)

Snake city

Frightening, dangerous, impressive, deadly, beautiful — call them what you will. There’s no denying that snakes are fascinating creatures with a certain charm.

Did you know that snakes use their tongues to smell? Some snakes have ‘heat’ vision that helps them track their prey. There are species of snakes that can glide through the air — imagine flying snakes! With more than 3,000 species slithering around the world, snakes are intriguing creatures that evoke curiosity, and fear as well.

The Asian vine snake’s geometric scale pattern reveals itself when it feels threatened and expands its body. Otherwise, it is almost all-green. If there is a breeze, these snakes sway back and forth with the foliage to add to their camouflage.

The eyelash viper gets its name from the scales that stand out above the eyes. Though found in a variety of colours such as red, brown, green or even pink, it’s the golden-yellow variety that is a real stand-out act.

Beautiful snakes are found in the oceans too. With light blue and black bands of colour, the sight of the banded sea krait gliding in the water is impressive indeed. Its venom is fast-acting, and it is a specialist in hunting eels and speedy fish.

The glistening sheen of rainbow colours on its scales makes the Brazilian rainbow boa a lovely sight. Being so unusually attractive, unfortunately, has its downside — they are popular in the pet trade, and are known to be removed from the wild and exported for sale.

The northern scarlet snake is a secretive species. It spends much of its time underground and is rarely encountered by humans, making it extremely hard to find. It looks very similar to the more common red milk snake.
