Crossing Over

What happens if a ship or boat needs to pass under a bridge that spans a waterway? The answer is movable bridges, of course.

A movable bridge is one that has mobile parts that change the form of the bridge, usually to allow a passage for boats. Movable bridges differ in the way they change their form. The most popular types are drawbridges, but retractable bridges, swing bridges, tilt bridges, vertical-lift bridges, and a few other types are also favoured.

The collection of terracota sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China is a form of funerary art. It had been buried with the emperor in the hope that it would protect him in the afterlife.

Throughout history, several greats have been assassinated — American Presidents Abraham Lincoln (1865) and John F. Kennedy (1963) and, Nigerian journalist, Dele Giwa (1986), and closer home, in India, Mahatma Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, to name a few.
And finally, who can forget the dying declaration, “Et tu, Brutus?” by legendary emperor Julius Caesar,who was stabbed to death in the hallowed halls of the Senate. It is said that the unforeseen result of the assassination was the precipitation of the end of the Roman Republic.

Spotlight on Asia

The biggest multi-sport games in the world after the Olympics is currently underway. Are you following the action at the Asian Games?

The Asian Games is currently underway, and will go on till September 2. The multi-sport event is held every four years, and this year marks its 18th edition. Forty five countries from Asia are participating in the event that features more than 450 events. The cities of Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia are playing host to around 10,000 athletes who are competing for top honours. The motto of the Games is ‘Energy of Asia’.


The Indian contingent

In July, the Indian Olympic Association announced a list of more than 500 athletes who will represent India at the Games. India will compete in archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, bowling, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, handball, hockey, kabaddi, rowing, tennis, shooting, squash, volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting and more. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony.

In the 2014 Asian Games held in South Korea, India finished eighth — bagging 57 medals including 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze.

As they strive for victory and glory for the nation, let’s root for the Indian contingent and cheer them on in their pursuit of excellence.
