From fines, bans, to jail time, many countries have begun to take steps towards a plastic-free future. Here are a few that stand out.
That plastic straw you threw out after you finished your milkshake, those plastic containers in which the restaurant home-delivered your food last weekend – chances are they are lying in some landfill somewhere in your city, stubbornly refusing to decompose. This goes for every bit of plastic you might have ever thrown out. Take a look at the efforts some countries are taking to reduce plastic use.

Staying indoors this vacation? Don’t let it get you down. Get crafty and make your own notes…
In this DIY activity, learn how to make your very own wind chime with simple materials! Hang it up where there is a breeze and listen to the melody it makes.
Things you will need:
-Thin strip of cardboard
-Any pointed object (to make holes)
-Glass or metal bangles (of same or different colours)
-String
-Stapler
Step 1:
On the thin strip of cardboard (about 30cm long), make 8 holes along the centre.
Step 2:
Bring the edges together to form a ring and staple them together.
Step 3:
Cut several pieces of string about 12cm in length. Tie one end to a bangle.
Step 4:
Similarly, by tying each end to a bangle as shown, barring the first piece of string, make four bangle loops.
Step 5:
Tie the loose end of each loop to a hole in the cardboard ring, leaving a gap of one hole between each.
Step 6:
Tie four pieces of string to the four holes between the loops. Hold the strings together to suspend your wind chime by the window, terrace or balcony and hear it ‘chime’!
Note: You can also use unused keys, marbles, and sea shells instead of bangles.

Give this compass a clear sense of direction by matching the cards in this memory game correctly. Turn on your explorer mode!
For people who are sailing, hiking or flying, a compass is a useful tool. The small needle in the device always points to the Earth’s magnetic north, giving explorers a sense of direction and helping them adjust their course.
Before you get set to explore, you must know which direction is where! The four cardinal directions are north, south, east and west. The four intermediate directions are northeast, southeast, southwest and northwest.
Now, the needle in a real compass always points north, but the one in this memory game is confused. Help it identify which direction is where by matching the cards correctly.
