Make your own pen stand

Make your own colourful pen stand with minimal material and effort. Try this at home today!

Let’s try our hand at making a pen or pencil stand that requires minimal material and effort; and, it’s personlised and your very own!

Materials: Six square sheets of paper of different colours (thicker sheets make for sturdier stands), glue

Steps:

1. Fold a square sheet of paper into four — first into half, and then again into half — so that when you open it out you are left with perpendicular fold lines.

2. Fold the top two corners towards the centre as shown.

3. Fold the bottom length-wise towards the centre.

4. Fold the left and right sides of the sheet towards the centre as shown.

5. Now, open out the folds you just made. Insert the right flap into the left and glue together. You have a triangle. Make five more.

6. Glue the sides of one triangle to another. Together they form a cone.

7. Your pen stand is ready!

Tech Mech – 7

Presenting some ‘reel’ life robots! Meet a few fascinating robots who have ruled the silver screen for a while now.

Today, technology has advanced to such a level that there are robots that can help serve food, devices such as Alexa that can control all the electronic appliances in your house, and robots such as the Aeolus Bot that can converse with people as well as act as a security guard.

However, it’s not just researchers and robotics enthusiasts that are fascinated by them; filmmakers have also been featuring them in various films since ages. While some films have depicted them in a negative light, others have opened up our minds to the possibilities that artificial intelligence and robotics have to offer.

I, Me, Myself

Do you know how to use I, me , and myself? If yes, how well are you able to apply it? Take this quiz to find out.

Using the correct word — I or me or myself — proves to be a challenge at times. Simple sentences like “I walked the dog” or “She gave the ball to me” are easy to handle, as we know to use “I” for the subject and “me” for the object, in a sentence. The difficulty arises when there is someone else in the sentence as well, for example, “Jane and I walked the dog”. See if you can get all the answers right in this exercise.

Drastic Plastic

April 22 is World Earth Day. This year, let’s join hands and encourage people to stop using plastic and clean up the mess.

“God wanted to make heaven, and the earth is that heaven. Nowhere in the universe there is so much love, life, beauty and peace. Enjoy your stay with the fellow beings.”
Dr. Amit Ray, author, spiritual master

Earth Day is a celebration of the planet. A day to remind us that earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and food. However, with pollution levels on the rise and rampant deforestation everywhere there is a dire need to save the earth. Pollution and deforestation cause damage to humans, animals and all organisms. Climate change is a direct effect of this.

History

In 1970, in San Francisco, U.S., activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson asked Americans to join in a grass roots demonstration. McConnell chose the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose April 22. Millions of people participated. Since then, Earth Day and all that it supports has grown, and many activities including planting trees, cleaning litter, or simply enjoying nature through hiking, gardening, or a stroll in a local park to learn about flora and fauna make up the day. Around 192 nations celebrate this day in the hope of finding a way to solve problems of the environment and look after it.

Theme

Earth Day Network, the organisation that leads Earth Day worldwide, announced that Earth Day 2018 will focus on mobilising the world to “End Plastic Pollution”. They hope to educate millions about the health and other risks associated with the use and disposal of plastic, including pollution of our oceans, water, and wildlife and about the growing evidence of what decomposing plastics are creating. It has been poisoning and injuring marine life and their presence is obvious in our food, causing major life-threatening diseases.
