Hidden Wonders

In a quest to watch big mammals, we miss out on a lot of nature’s other star performers. Read on to find out more about the smaller side of nature…

India is a land of astounding biodiversity. Most people refer to it as the land of the tiger, lion and elephant. However, apart from these celebrity animals, there are thousands of species of flora and fauna in our forests. Common comments when someone visits a wildlife reserve include, ‘I went to this sanctuary but I didn’t see any tiger or leopard’ and ‘It is so lifeless’. Well, sighting a tiger or any other big mammal is a matter of luck (which actually means being in the right place at the right time and carefully observing the tell tale signs of nature).

In a quest to watch big mammals, we miss out on a lot of nature’s other beautiful wonders. Watching them not only gives us an idea about our rich biodiversity but will also help us understand nature better.

Life in water

Streams could be a good place to start. When we walk near a stream, we would think that it is silent and there is hardly any life. But when we diligently observe, we can spend hours near a stream watching small creatures performing their roles silently. Water skitters, spiders, a variety of birds, mud puddling butterflies, fungi, insects and frogs are some of the species one could look out for near a stream.

Frogs are generally considered slimy but they are beautiful creatures playing an important role in our ecosystem. Even in small village ponds there are common species of amphibians like skitter frogs and common Indian Toads. They play an important role in the pond ecosystem, keeping pests under control. A healthy population of frogs indicates the health of a forest as they are the first few species to disappear when a forest gets destroyed.

Dung beetle’s struggle

Another interesting species is the dung beetle. They are common in towns and villages. We could find them even in a small cowshed. In the forests, it is often seen near the excreta of animals. The beetle carefully takes small chunks of dung to form a ball. It rolls it to a safe place for laying eggs and feeding. It faces numerous intruders on its way trying to steal the ball. The way it defends and manoeuvres the ball is a sight to watch.

Like the dung beetle’s struggle, there are many such unnoticed natural history events happening as we talk. There are interesting little species to look out for. Observing them is a starting point for us to get addicted to nature.

Keep your eyes open

This will make us understand the importance of nature and also help us in becoming a naturalist, a bird watcher, a wildlife photographer and a lot more.

But ‘diligent observation’ is the key. There is no doubt that big animals are beautiful to observe. But it is important not to concentrate only on them and throng wildlife reserves in a rage. It affects the ecosystem and wildlife. What pleasure is watching wildlife when 20 jeeps surround you and the animal!

Bunraku – Japanese Puppetry

Let’s take a look at how an ancient form of puppetry combined with animation to form ‘The Book of Pooh’. Get to know more about ‘Bunraku’ as well…

‘The Book of Pooh’ incorporates the mesmerizing look of Bunraku, a form of Japanese puppetry that dates back 300 years, combined with real-time CG virtual sets of the entire Hundred Acre Woods.

Bunraku, also known as Ningyō jōruri, is a form of traditional Japanese puppet theatre, founded in Osaka in the beginning of 17th century. Three kinds of performers take part in a bunraku performance: the Ningyōtsukai or Ningyōzukai (puppeteers), the Tayū (chanters) and shamisen (musicians). Occasionally other instruments such as taiko drums are used.

Read between the Lines

Read this article about the exuberant Rio Carnival that answer the questions that follow! Can you get them all right?

The passage below is all about the Rio Carnival 2018! Read it and answer the questions that follow.

The five-day celebration is set to begin. The date is usually 40 days before Easter, on a Friday and ends on an Ash Wednesday. The first festival is said to have begun in 1723. During the days of the carnival little happens in Rio. People gather in the streets, beaches and public spaces to watch the floats, the adornments and the Samba Parade.

Rio Carnival 2018 will culminate with the top samba schools in Rio competing with each other to put on the best parade possible. As samba grew in popularity so did the need for schools. The Sambadrome was built in 1984 to make sure all the samba school parades were held under a single roof. This allowed spectators to purchase tickets and enjoy the parades.

This year too, the samba schools will first decide on a theme which will be followed by the school composers and musician writing out a song on the chosen theme. Once the song is complete, choreographers and dancers make up several different routines to be used during the Sambadrome show. Along with the choreography, the engineers and carpenters get together to build grand technological marvels, better known as parade floats. Finally the visual delights such as the costumes are decided to compliment the theme. On the day of the competition each school performs in front of 40 judges vying for the title of Samba Champion.

Another highlight of the year is the crowning of King Momo by the city’s mayor. It is then the responsibility of King Momo to spread the word that the Carnival has begun. Balls, street parties, and dances begin to spring up all over the city. It is considered the biggest carnival in the world with two million people a day on the streets.

There’s a car in space! It was sent into space as part of a test launch for the super heavy rocket named Falcon Heavy.

The Falcon Heavy is a reusable super heavy-lift launch vehicle designed and manufactured by SpaceX. SpaceX successfully launched the Falcon Heavy on February 6, 2018, at 3:45 p.m. EST. The dummy payload on its maiden flight was SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster. Scroll over and take a look at some of the fantastic photos…

Though the Falcon Heavy’s two outer cores successfully landed after the launch, the core centre booster missed the drone ship where it was supposed to land and is supposed to have fallen into the sea. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space, including to the Moon and Mars, although as of February 5, 2018, there are no plans to use Falcon Heavy for crewed missions; it will instead be devoted to payloads such as large satellites.
