Have you ever wondered why some animal characters in your favourite book or film are able to talk like humans? Well, this is called anthropomorphism. Anthropomorphism is when animals or non-human characters are given human characteristics – the animal or object behaves as if it is human. For example, Lumiere from the film Beauty and the Beast is anthropomorphic, because he is a candlestick that can talk, walk and have emotions like humans do. Another example is Mickey Mouse.

Drawing the Face

Drawing and sketching the face is the next big challenge after drawing the eyes. Let’s look at this aspect through different types of illustrations…

Continuing from the previous article of drawing the eyes, we move on to drawing faces. Here are a couple of sketches for you to replicate and practice.

Expressions on faces require a lot more practice. In this example from a comic sketch, there are a few expressions of a musician. In the second expression, the eyes are missing and in the third one, the whole face is missing. Try and complete them, by sketching the expressions. You can download the activity sheet here.
