Learn Science through Sports – 9

There’s a lot of science that goes behind a pole-vault, especially with respect to transfer of energy! Let’s take a look…

Pole vaulting is a track and field event in which a person uses a long, flexible pole (which today is usually made either of fiberglass or carbon fiber) as an aid to jump over a bar. Two of the most famous pole vaulters are Yelena Isinbayeva and Sergey Bubka!

The idea of going up almost 20 feet on a stick is astonishing. It is achieved by transferring energy from the muscles in motion onto the energy of the pole and then back to the body! Slide through the frames to get an idea…

That was interesting! Rule changes over the years have resulted in larger landing areas and additional padding of all hard and unyielding surfaces. Chances are, more records will be broken!

Drawing the Human Body

One of the tougher subjects to draw or sketch is the human body. Let’s look at some of the basics to be able to do it better…

One of the tougher things to draw or sketch is the human body. There are so many places where you can make mistakes – disproportionate body, eyes, nose, mouth etc. It is always a good idea to get started with body proportion. In the olden days, artists used to rely on stick drawings or models. It is a good idea to start with simple stick drawings to get body proportion right – as shown below…

Once you have done that, you can focus on whatever scene or frame you want to draw, and start with the outline. Then, you can finalize your drawing by erasing the minor flaws and redrawing the scene. You can see the change from outline to final as you move the slider below…

Remember, the objective here is not about portraits, but getting the body shape and position correct. Over the next few articles, we shall look at portraits as well.

World Rivers Day was celebrated on September 24. Let’s take a look at the state of rivers and freshwater…

World Rivers Day, celebrated on September 24, is meant to be a celebration of the world’s waterways. It is an occasion to highlight the value of rivers, and increase public awareness.

First and foremost, it’s important to know the key rivers of the world and around you. Here’s a graphic showing the amount of freshwater available along with a map of some of the larger rivers of the world. It’s quite informative!

You can download the map and mark other important rivers in your country. Definitely a few in India and maybe Australia..

In India, there are both perennial and seasonal rivers. More importantly, there are some zones which are identified as sensitive during monsoons and prone to floods. Due to climate change and man-made factors (encroachment, construction, deforestation etc.), regions have become highly sensitive. Even cities like Mumbai and Chennai have seen recent flooding because the marshlands and canals have been built upon or blocked. Move the slider to know the rivers and the flood zones in the country.
