Safety and Hygiene – 3

September 9 is World First Aid Day. Let’s continue to bring awareness about the importance of first aid…

We continue on our exploration inside a first aid kit – this time, on some of the equipment that is necessary when you are out on the field or for a long duration of time. This normally happens when you are on a multi-day hike, or going on an adventure! Click on the hotspots to learn more…

Note: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest. It is recommended in those who are unresponsive with no breathing or abnormal breathing. It should be performed by trained students or personnel only.

A Shot in the Arm

Do you play sports involving a bat or a racquet? Let’s take a look at one of the most common conditions that affects such players as they grow older…

A ‘tennis elbow’ is a condition in which the outer part of the elbow becomes sore and tender at the ‘lateral epicondyle’. The forearm muscles and tendons become damaged from repetitive overuse. This leads to pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow. Watch this video on how the elbow is affected.

A lot of sports players including cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar have suffered from a tennis elbow. Tennis elbow is a type of repetitive strain injury resulting from tendon overuse and failed healing of the tendon. In addition, the extensor ‘carpi radialis brevis’ muscle plays a key role. Slide through the frames to know which part is actually affected.

Symptoms associated with tennis elbow include, but are not limited to: radiating pain from the outside of the elbow to the forearm and wrist, pain during extension of wrist, weakness of the forearm, a painful grip while shaking hands or torquing a doorknob, and not being able to hold relatively heavy items in the hand. The pain is similar to the condition known as golfer’s elbow, but the latter occurs at the medial side of the elbow. So make sure you get any pain or injuries examined as soon as you see or sense them!

Design from Nature – 8

Let’s look at an interesting inspiration from nature – something to do with beavers, as they constantly move between land and water…

Beavers are known for their natural trait of building dams on rivers and streams, and building their homes (known as ‘lodges’) in the resulting pond. Beavers also build canals to float building materials that are difficult to haul over land.

One of the main reasons they stay warm during their swimming, diving and other antics in water is a layer of ‘blubber’. Another important aspect is their fur – it is so dense that it traps warm pockets of air in between the layers, keeping them not only warm but also dry. This has been something that scientists have tried to emulate when designing wetsuits.

Surfers spend a lot of time in water and constantly get splashed by waves. Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T) think rubbery, fur-like pelts in wetsuits might help the surfers keep themselves warm and dry as well. Let’s see how this science develops over the next few years!
