Here are some of the important events of 2024. How much do you know about them?

Almost a week has passed by since this New Year, and before we know it, this year too will flash by. Like last year, this year has many eventful things to look forward to.

At least 40 countries will be going to the polls including India, the U.S., Russia, Iran, Pakistan, to name a few. This means that almost 40 percent of the world’s population will be electing their national leaders.

Then, there are space events that India is preparing itself for, as well as China’s Chang’e 6 mission which will aim to obtain soil and rock samples from the far side of the moon, and NASA’s Artemis III, a crewed mission that will fly to the moon and back.

As for sporting events, the Olympics will take centerstage this July and August, and the European Championship UEFA 2024, which will be a treat for football fans. The ICC Men’s and Women’s T20 Cup await cricket buffs.

This year also marks several significant anniversaries including the 75th year of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), 50 years since Operation Smiling Buddha, India’s first successful nuclear test, and the discovery of the Terracotta Army in China, one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites. The London Eye turns 25 and the One World trade Centre in New York City turns 10.

The festival typically begins in early January and lasts for about a month, showcasing a wonderland of intricately carved sculptures, illuminated by colourful lights, creating a magical spectacle.

Visitors can explore ice castles, sculptures of famous landmarks, participate in ice-related activities, and enjoy various cultural events during this winter extravaganza. In fact, apart from hosting this festival, the city is renowned as the ice-carving capital of China. Skilled artisans create magnificent ice sculptures throughout the year. Harbin introduced the first tram system in China in 1899, making it a pioneer in public transportation in the country.
