The Beauty of Numbers – 1

Nature throws up some amazing wonders relating to numbers. In this series, we are going to look at just that – aesthetics and beauty of numbers…

Did you know why the ‘natural numbers’ starting from 1,2,3,4…. are called so? It’s because they can be found in nature! We can see ‘1’ lake, ‘2’ elephants, ‘3’ trees etc. Zero became accepted only about thousands of years ago! People also needed something to identify ‘nothingness’ or sometimes to be used as a separator or placeholder. In this series, we shall look at some numbers and patterns in nature.

golden_ratio

The first is the Golden Ratio of 1.618 approximately. Two quantities are said to be in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. This is found often in nature and related to the Fibonacci series where each number is the sum of the previous 2 numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 and so on. We shall look at the Fibonacci series in more detail later.

Here are a few examples of the golden ratio or a golden spiral in nature and design. Part of the spiral is depicted so that you know where to look. Can you spot it? Move the slider from right to left to unveil.

Famous Artists – 1

Art is an exciting medium for learners and artists to delve into and create masterpieces. Let’s look at some famous artists in this series…

Let’s look at some wonderful artists from the past, as well as recent times, over this series. Painting used to be one of the main visual art forms, but has been overtaken by photography, video, and performance of late. But there is nothing quite like the experience of squeezing a tube of paint or applying a thick coat of paint from the paintbrush on to a canvas!

The ‘Old Masters’ were European artists working around or before 1800 AD. Their work was characterised by extreme technical skill, a distinctive style and sometimes mystic beauty which has kept the artwork popular through the ages. Some of these artists include Leonardo Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Goya – take a look at some of their works…

Then came the turn of the 20th century and the famous ‘Modern Masters’ including Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Salvador Dali, and Frida Kahlo. It was difficult for women to break into that group and Frida did just that! Here they are…

Wow! Some of their works are so inspiring and unique! We shall be back with more works of art in this series.
