Design from Nature – 6

There’s a buzz in the air! This time, we have a flying inspiration…take a look at an interesting piece of innovation.

Whenever we think of flying mammals, there’s only one which comes to our mind – the bat! No wonder that they have been an inspiration for designers.

Most of the research projects are normally government initiatives in the field of military or healthcare and eventually find different uses. This time, they have come up with a solar powered spy-cam. Take a look – move the slider to get a perspective of how this looks in nature and in design!

The wingspan of the bat is similar in size to small solar panels/cells. There are some concepts being tested, including small cameras for stereo-vision, a set of mini-microphones that can track sounds from different directions, and even small sensors for nuclear radiation and poisonous gases!

World Music Day

June 21 is World Music Day! Read on to find out how this day is celebrated around the world.

Did you know that June 21 is World Music Day? It is also known as ‘Music Day’ or more commonly as ‘Fête de la Musique’ because of it’s origination in France. The concept of an all-day musical celebration on the days of the solstice, was originated by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang in 1981.

The festival later became celebrated in 120 countries around the world and now is an opportunity for people from across the world to share their culture through music. Parades and marches are held in various cities around the globe.

The aim of is to promote music in two ways:

– Amateur and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets, under the slogan “Faites de la musique” (“make music”, a homophone of Fête de la Musique).

– Many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public. Two of the caveats to being sanctioned by the official Fête de la Musique organization in Paris are that all concerts must be free to the public, and all performers donate their time for free. This is true of most participating cities, now, as well.

Go through the images below to get a small glimpse of the celebrations from various cities.
