Adjective adventure

‘Old brown table’ or ‘brown old table’? How do we know which adjective goes where? Read on.

When we use more than one adjective before a noun, we often put them in a specific order. Mixing up the adjectives can make your sentence sound weird, though you may not be able to pinpoint exactly why. We often use the correct order without realising it.

The order of adjectives is usually as follows: quantity, quality/opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose, and then finally the noun. So now you know why saying “white big building” sounds wrong, but “big white building” sounds just right.

Do keep in mind two things here: the first is that it’s very rare to use more than three adjectives before a noun, and the second is that sometimes the order can be changed, usually to emphasise something.

Task you for! In the below sentences, can you drag and drop the adjectives in the correct order? (P.S. We’ve left out the commas to make it less confusing)
