Parents these days worry too much about the amount of time kids spend on devices. The number of entertainment APPs, videos and games for kids are increasingly taking over kids’ attention.

Mitch Resnick from MIT Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten in his book “Cultivating creativity through Projects, Passion, Peers, and Play” says “rather than minimizing screen time, parents and teachers should try to maximize creative time”. The Scratch coding platform, created by Resnick, aims to do exactly that.

Scratch, for kids of ages 8 to 16, allows you to program and create your own animation, stories and games through simple drag and drop blocks.

The open-source, free to download software, has a step-by-step beginner’s guide that allows children to create programs right from the get go. They have made it one step easier by providing an offline version – so you don’t necessarily need to be connected to the internet to program!

The example program below shows you how simple but effective thinking can enable a powerful creative output! Try this at home and unleash your creativity with Scratch.

Once you start coding, you become creators of technology, not just mere users!
