National Maritime Day is celebrated in India on April 5 every year to commemorate the maiden voyage of the first Indian-owned steamship, SS Loyalty, which sailed from Mumbai to London in 1919. The day is also an occasion to honour the seafarers and the shipping industry’s workforce for their contribution to the country’s development.
