Fires can start and spread quickly, which is why we all need to be careful and educated when it comes to fire safety. There are a few things to keep in mind when learning about fire safety, remember the “Three P’s”:

    Prevent
    Plan
    Practice

Prevent fires keeping in mind these tips:
– Never cook without an adult present.
– Don’t play in the kitchen when someone is cooking.
– Keep towels and other flamables away from stove-tops, fire places and heaters.
– Never place clothes or other flamables on a lamp.
– Do not plug too many items into a single electrical outlet.
– Never play with matches or lighters!

Plan an escape strategy in case of a fire. You and your family should have an escape plan if there ever is a fire. You should be familiar with at least two escape routes from every room and a safe meeting place for your family to gather once outside the home.

Practise safety. Take time to practice what you’ll do if ever you see or smell smoke. Remember:
– Don’t be scared and react fast! The faster you act, the safer you’ll be.
– Never hide. Try to get out as quickly as possible and stay out. Never go back in for any reason.
– If you see or smell smoke, “Stay Low and Go!” (Smoke rises, so it is safer to crawl, or stay as low to the ground as possible to avoid getting caught in the smoke)
– If your clothes catch on fire remember to “Stop! Drop! and Roll!” This will help put out the fire.
