The Asian Games is currently underway, and will go on till September 2. The multi-sport event is held every four years, and this year marks its 18th edition. Forty five countries from Asia are participating in the event that features more than 450 events. The cities of Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia are playing host to around 10,000 athletes who are competing for top honours. The motto of the Games is ‘Energy of Asia’.

The Indian contingent

In July, the Indian Olympic Association announced a list of more than 500 athletes who will represent India at the Games. India will compete in archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, bowling, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, handball, hockey, kabaddi, rowing, tennis, shooting, squash, volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting and more. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony.

In the 2014 Asian Games held in South Korea, India finished eighth — bagging 57 medals including 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze.

As they strive for victory and glory for the nation, let’s root for the Indian contingent and cheer them on in their pursuit of excellence.
