Earth is a part of a solar system where the sun is at the centre. This galactic system is part of the Milky Way galaxy.

What is a galaxy?

It is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems. They are all held together by gravity. There are 3 main types of galaxies, classified based on their shape: spiral, elliptical, and irregular.

Features of a galaxy:

1. Each has millions, billions or trillions of starts depending on its size.

2. Almost all galaxies – except a few tiny dwarf galaxies – have a supermassive black hole at the centre.

3. All galaxies tend to spin and have significant magnetic fields.
