The long and short of it
The world’s longest rivers are big, natural streams of water that flow between clear edges, called banks. These rivers often have smaller streams, called tributaries, that join them and help carry water across large areas of land. Measuring how long a river is can be tricky because different countries have different ways of deciding what counts as part of a river. Some of the biggest rivers in the world are longer than 1,000 miles!
The Nile is the longest river in the world and is called the father of African rivers.
