The Nobel Prizes are named after Alfred Bernhard Nobel, a Swedish chemist, engineer, and inventor. Among his many claims to fame is having invented dynamite. However, he is most famous for bequeathing his wealth to set up the Nobel Prizes. In his last will, he specified that a large part of his wealth should be used for prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace to “those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” The first Nobel Prizes were awarded on December 10, 1901; the fifth anniversary of his death anniversary. Therefore the day is known as Nobel Day.
