Famous sports personalities are often remembered by their jersey numbers. You would have seen a lot of fans buy numbered jerseys and t-shirts from sports shops!
Sometimes, these jersey numbers are ‘retired’. Retiring the number of an athlete is an honour a team bestows upon a player. The first number officially retired by a team in a professional sport was that of ice hockey player Ace Bailey, whose number 6 was retired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1934.
