Showcase: Sparrow, Forest and Water Themes (2025)

  • Don’t take water for granted
Today, we throw caution to the wind and waste Nature’s precious gift: water. It is the lifeblood of our future. Don’t waste a drop of it. The ball is in your court: save it. Let our dreams align on the same track to conserve it. Water is the bread-and-butter of our survival; don’t take it for granted. It is the linchpin of our ecosystem, shaping and moulding our future. We are caught between a rock and a hard place, relying on water for everything, be it domestic or industrial. Put your best foot forward and get out of the woods for, the clock is ticking. Act together towards our common goal of conserving water.
Harini T., VIII, Primrose School, Puducherry

    Water conservation matters
Water is amazing. It makes up almost 70% of our body; we should be grateful for this natural resource. But did you know that many people do not have access to clean water? This is why we celebrate International Water Day on March 22, to create an awareness about conserving water.
Only a tiny fraction of the Earth’s water is fresh, and most of it is trapped in glaciers and polar ice caps. Hence, we need to conserve water carefully. We can help by taking simple measures in our daily lives. Acts such as turning off the tap while brushing our teeth, using a bucket of water to bathe in or wash our cars, and filtering waste water will go a long way in saving every drop.
Urvi Sai, V, Ekya School, J.P. Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka

    Preserve water
Water is important. We need clean unpolluted water for a healthy living. So, we need to stop polluting it. Water pollution kills thousands of marine animals, as they swallow plastics and toxic chemicals in the water. So, what can we do?
We can stop using plastics, recycle waste, and stop throwing our waste in water bodies. It is important that we conserve water for future generations.
Kayal Prasana, IV, Kamala Niketan Montessori School, Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu

    Colourless elixir
    Water is our life,
    Water is everywhere,
But we just don’t seem to care.
    We think it remains,
    But it is the main,
    Believe it or not.
    Water is a relief.
You can save water from being dirty,
Rainwater is the only form of pure water,
    So, if you save rainwater,
    You save pure water.
We need to stop water pollution,
One day you will find the solution.

    Crystal clear
    Water, water everywhere,
We need it to drink, play, and use,
It is clear and clean and fun to see,
Water is good for you and me.
We splash in puddles on a rainy day,
We swim in pools in a happy way,
We drink it fresh from a river,
Water is yummy all the time.

    Drops of joy
    Water, oh, water,
    So pure and fine.
    We need it to live,
    To grow, all the time
We need clean and healthy water,
    For our bodies to survive.

    The prized drop
    We need it to live,
    We need to drink.
    If it wasn’t there,
    We won’t be alive.
It makes our earth mostly blue,
Even when we try and make it brown.
Drought and famine are caused by its absence,
While floods are caused due to its excess.
    That’s right, it is water.
    The thing that we need,
    But still proceed to waste.

    The most precious thing
Hey Water, I want to have a conversation with you. Guess who is the most precious thing in the world? You. Guess what’s something people can’t live without? You. Guess what is something that makes people fresh? You.
Unfortunately, people also waste you a lot. I believe this will change someday and hope that ‘someday’ is near. Do you know that you save people’s lives from fire? You make us feel energetic, fresh, and calm, and more. We don’t know how to thank you.

    Every drop, a treasure
This World Water Day, we meet,
    Bound to support,
    Every drop of water
That we use day and night.
It is part of daily needs, we find,
Essential for life, of every kind.
On this day, let’s take a stand,
    To preserve and save
    This precious gift, beyond compare.
With every drop, a pledge to heal the world.

    A drop of change
    Water, water everywhere,
But it’s getting polluted, and nobody cares.
Throwing in trash and oil a lot,
Leaving oceans and rivers to rot.
Sea animals die, some species go extinct,
Some species have gone to the brink.
Due to microplastics, water becomes toxic to drink,
Now scientists all over the world think,
“How can we make the world know,
That harming water is a no-no?”
How can we warn people about this risk?”
That’s why we have World Water Day,
To make people realise their carelessness.
If we clean a lake, we can save the Earth,
Remember, a single drop of water is equally worth it.

    Tiny friends
    Little sparrow on my windowsill,
Noise made you scarce in the city,
Country meadows are where you enjoy,
I come every year, and you give me joy.
Seeds and fruits are what you peck,
Eat away and bring me good luck.
    Chirp away, dear little sparrow,
I’ll wake up to your chirping early tomorrow.

    The vanishing chirp
It was a lovely day in a grade one classroom. The Science teacher asked the students, “Do you know where the sparrows live?”
A little girl raised her hand and said, “In my father’s laptop.”
What an alarming situation we have! This is how we learn: through charts and devices. We get no time to learn through observation.
Sparrows play a crucial role in seed dispersal and pollination. They are fast reducing in number because of habitat loss and the increased usage of mobile phones and various electronic devices. Disturbing Nature’s ecological cycle will only lead us to a deprived future. It is time to do a health check for the environment around us.

    Little sparrows
    Little sparrows, small and bright,
    Your flapping wings take flight
With tiny wings and feathers brown,
Up in the sky you go round and round.
    Little sparrows, small and bright,
They work all day and rest at night.
They build their nests twig by twig
In a crevice, either small or big.
    The sparrow teaches us that,
    Hard work makes life better.

    Sparrows
    They perch on trees,
    They eat small seeds.
    They are very small,
    But, they stand very tall.
    They are called sparrows.
The world of sparrows is going to end.
We humans are responsible for this,
We are the ones who are going to miss,
These lovely birds who are very small,
But, you see, they stand very tall.

    Feathered friends
    I love the sparrows,
They are small, tiny, and brown.
    With their feathers,
    They fly and flutter,
    Everywhere they go.
    I feel so happy,
    When I see them play,
    Hopping and chirping,
    In their own way.

    Nature’s friend
    Mesmerised in my dreams,
    I sat there thinking, thinking…
    Until, outside my window sill,
    A little ‘peck ‘ I heard.
    I moved the curtain away,
    Pecking at my window,
    Was a grey-brown sparrow.
A wave of despair hit me.
    Pity filled my heart,
I gazed at it, it gazed at me.
    Just a window pane apart,
It chirped a chirp of fear.
The cold it could not bear.
    I opened the window,
    And let the sparrow in.
Got a blanket, wrapped it warm,
Gave it seeds and made it calm.
For weeks it stayed with me,
But one day I let it free.
I formed a close bond till the end,
    Sparrow, Nature’s true friend.

    Tiny soul
    Sparrow, how tiny you are,
You took off in the air.
    As you soar up high,
It makes me want to reach the sky.
    When I sit with you,
    All my worries fade away,
You bring me joy in your own special way.
So, I promise to lend a hand to keep you safe and sound.

    Sweet little sparrow
    Oh, sweet little sparrow,
    Where are you now?
    You used to be everywhere,
    But now you are not.
    Pecking on the window sill,
    Hopping on the grass,
    Flying swiftly with the wind,
You used to be here and there.
    At your melodious chirping,
    My heart used to melt.
But our tall towers and posts,
    Shock you to death.
I wish we could find a way,
    To save your flock.
Then would you be joyfully living,
Our world would be a happy place.
    All because of little sparrows,
    And their peaceful grace.
Padma Renee Bijeesh, IV, Vidyodaya School, Ernakulam, Kerala

    The little sparrow
Of all the birds that soar the sky,
    A sparrow is most unique.
It leaps and flies with ease,
    Its chirping so rhythmic.
The unkind world sees it to be dull,
But it is a gem so rare to find.
Where does it hide as autumn comes?
To come with spring and bring the blooms,
    A truly magical creature.

    Green saviours
    Forests are so beautiful,
Home to animals, birds and bugs
Among the leaves, on trees and shrubs.
But today’s man consumes them for timber,
And cuts them down with saws and plugs.
Let us save forests, for a happy life,
Destroying them brings nothing but strife.
Hrithvik V., V, Srimathi Sundaravalli Memorial School, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

    Say no to deforestation
    Drought wrapped the village,
    And refused to unfold.
The trees which were green and bold,
    Are not there any more.
    We humans caused the drought,
But it’s something we don’t understand.
The animals that roamed are no more.
    To build our houses,
    We destroyed their home.
The trees in the forests gave us rain,
    Now, without rain,
    The drought has its reign.
    We wiped out their homes,
    That’s why they roam around.
    Deforestation has crossed all bounds.
At least now, can we save the remaining forests?
Say no to deforestation and yes to afforestation.

    Forests
From where do we get all our stuff?
Not having these will make living tough.
Any guesses, what this may be?
Well, it is now rarely seen,
    Through generations it has been.
It is a forest that gives the Earth life,
    And keeps all creatures alive.
So, let’s preserve this wonderful part of life,
Which gives us everything we use in day-to-day life.

In the dead of the night
Forests are dark and scary at night,
When the moon is white, shining bright.
    The trees are green,
    The bear is brown,
    The mushrooms are colourful,
Everybody is showing off their colours.
And now, we have a contest.
Trees are rustling in the wind,
    The wild cat is meowing,
    The big cat is roaring,
    Everybody is making their sound.
    Roaring, tweeting, squeaking, chirping
And now, we have a fight.

    Lungs of the earth
Nina strolled past the hall and entered her classroom, beaming. She sat down with her best friend, Tina, and started chatting. Their teacher initiated a class discussion after roll-call about the significance of forests. Intrigued, Nina pondered over it for the whole period. After returning home, she wolfed down her food began to work. Her brother helped by giving her his books. Nina read them all meticulously and recorded the information and her thoughts. She researched the topic on the Internet and found that there was a special day dedicated to forests known as the ‘International Day of Forests’. She learnt that forests maintained the planet’s health by being a home for diverse species, regulating climate, providing oxygen and supporting the water cycle. They prevented soil erosion and provided resources like timber and medicinal plants. She decided to give a class presentation on the topic ‘Lungs of Earth’. When she did won a prize for her efforts.

    The forest rises
I was trekking in the Western Ghats when I heard a voice that reminded me of Treebeard from Lord of The Rings. I shouted, “Who are you?”
The voice replied, “I am a Tirunelveli redwood. Is today an auspicious day? Humans are planting trees like they have been possessed.”
I replied, “Today is International Day of Forests.”
The tree replied, “How ironic. Talking about saving, but you keep cutting us down for your own purpose and that will be your end. You plant trees one day out of 365 days; on the rest, you are busy destroying us. Millions of my family members died in Los Angeles because of humans. So many animals also died. You blame it on natural causes but never realise that you are the reason.”
I woke up realising it was a dream. A tree had talked to me right before International Day of Forests. Why can’t nature and forest service be made compulsory like military service? Take a step, a small one, but all that matters is that it makes a difference. The world is not just for humans but for all living beings.

    Bloom’s message
Hello everyone. I am Bloom, Mother Nature’s messenger. I have come to warn you. You are destroying her beautiful treasures like forests and rivers. On the way to Earth, I saw so many people throwing bags full of waste into rivers and seas. Don’t they realise this is killing millions of lives in the water? Well, Mother Nature is upset and angry. She believes that if you don’t act now and protect her, you will soon suffer her wrath.
You can start by taking baby steps — plant more trees, save rain water, recycle waste, carpool, electric cars, and so on. I am sure you have already seen the signs of her anger: sudden weather changes, unpredictable monsoon, global warming. Now that I’ve warned you, I will leave. I hope you will listen to my words and start taking steps for a better tomorrow.
