    Do ants sleep?

    A. Vishalakshi , Secunderabad, Telangana

It is often assumed that ants do not sleep. When we watch them, they are always moving and working hard to help their queen survive. But, contrary to what you see, they do sleep. However, their sleeping patterns are different from humans. They have a cyclical pattern of resting period. Worker ants take about 250 tiny power naps that last about a minute on an average through the day and night. The queen on the other hand sleeps for about six minutes, 90 times through 24 hours. The queen also lives 100 times longer than the worker ants.

Why don't we know when a mosquito bites us?

    Vardaan Sethi , Faridabad, Haryana

Mosquitoes can be sneaky with their bites. They have extremely small mouth parts, which make it hard to feel when they bite us. We can’t feel the legs because of its low weight and small leg surface area touching the bitten area. Also, it depends on where they bite us, as some areas are more sensitive and we feel it immediately. After the bite, it’s the mosquito’s saliva that causes the itching which is when we feel the bite.

Why are traffic lights red, green and yellow?

    Shivadakshini , Salem, Tamil Nadu

This is mainly because in the colour spectrum the colours red, yellow and green have the highest wavelength, which means they are easily seen from a long distance, compared to other colours. Red has the highest wavelength. That is why it is used to indicate the stop sign. We can see it from far away and know that there is a stop ahead.
